ASTs Making a Difference - Case Studies
The outreach and inreach work of Advanced Skills Teachers (ASTs) make a huge difference to both the students and the teachers with whom they work. ASTs bring creative approaches to teaching that not only captivates students, but also impacts on results. Through their coaching and mentoring skills, ASTs often support teachers who may be in difficulty or just need some help. In these ways, and others, the skills of ASTs are improving teaching and learning across the country and improving the life chances of young people.
The case studies shown here demonstrate the impact of ASTs through:
• Coaching and mentoring
• Bringing creative dimensions to teaching
• Putting in place new schemes of work
Emma Thom, secondary geography AST, coaches and mentors the teachers in her school with great success.
Nick McIvor, secondary maths AST working with a primary school, helped to raise the percentage of pupils in Year 6 gaining Level 4 or above by 33%.
Dr Marcella McCarthy, secondary English AST, devised and shared a scheme of work for Year 9 students relating to the GCSE Spoken Language module.
Maria Young, secondary music AST working with primary schools, created a timely and engaging scheme of work involving MFL and music that was hugely successful.
