Governor Training

If governing bodies are to be effective they need to ensure that they know their roles and responsibilities and stay abreast of changes to education law and practice. A focus on their own training and development should be central to the work of all governors.

We provide a comprehensive range of training and development opportunities for governors at all levels of experience.

Our training programme consists of over 120 training and development sessions each year at a wide variety of locations around Surrey and offering a range of session times, days of the week and weekend courses.

All courses can now be booked online.

CPD Online Guide for Governors and Clerks  

Our Policy
We aim to:

• enable governors to be effective members of their governing body and to encourage a sense of teamwork through the development of skills and the valuing of individual contributions;
• assess the needs of governors and governing bodies and offer access to high quality training and other events on appropriate subjects;
• ensure that particular groups, i.e. new and specialist governors, are offered support in appropriate ways, enabling them to fulfil their duties;
• encourage governing bodies to evaluate their own effectiveness, and to help plan appropriate programmes of development in relation to assuring performance and raising standards of achievement.

Communication
A printed copy of the Training and Development Programme for School Governors is sent to every governor and clerk on our database. There is no charge for any published Governance Consultancy courses for schools that have a Governance Training Service Level Agreement at Level 1 or 2.

Governors are kept up to date with the latest initiatives, best practice and governance issues through the Surrey Governor to Governors, which is sent to every governor on our database.

Individual course information can be viewed via the Babcock 4S Conference and Course Event website.

Training materials and handouts
In the main our training course materials are not available on the website as the success of most governor training courses is dependent upon the interactive activities, exercises and discussion undertaken which cannot necessarily be reflected in powerpoint presentatations posted onto a website.
However materials from the Chairmen's meetings and Clerks Development sessions are available to download.
