Advanced Skills Teachers
Advanced Skills Teachers are highly respected members of the teaching community who have particular responsibilities associated with the title, such as spending 20% of each working week on outreach activities supporting the professional development of teachers from other schools. However, their most important asset will be the excellence in classroom teaching that they possess and demonstrate.
The responsibilities associated with the AST role include:
• Working with other teachers on classroom organization and teaching methods and providing model lessons
• Disseminating best practice based on educational research
• Providing high quality teaching materials
• Advising on a professional level
• Participating in the performance management of other teachers
• Helping teachers who are experiencing difficulties
• Mentoring newly qualified teachers
• Initial teacher training
Advanced Skills Teacher guidance
Excellent Teachers
As with Advanced Skills Teachers, Excellent Teachers are highly respected members of the teaching community. They will also have excellence in teaching but they will not spend 20% of their time in outreach.
Responsibilities associated with ET status include highest standards of:
• Teaching
• Classroom Management
• Maintaining discipline
• Planning
• Assessment Excellent pupil progress
• Professional expertise – to provide an exemplary role model for staff
Excellent Teachers will demonstrate a distinctive role in improving teaching and learning across the whole school by:
• Participating in the induction of newly qualified teachers
• Participating in the professional mentoring of other teachers
• Helping other teachers to develop their expertise in planning, preparation and assessment
• Helping other teachers to improve their teaching practice and evaluate the impact of their teaching on pupils
