Clerking SLA

We offer professional, trained clerks to provide an expert, quality-assured clerking service to schools.

The DfE National College Clerks’ Development Programme has come to an end and we have launched a series of exciting new development opportunities for clerks in 2018. The programme will reference the 2017 DfE Clerking Competency Framework, Ofsted, and the latest departmental advice and guidance.

Key features of the service

Our Clerking Service includes the following:

  • Face to face introductory meeting between Head, Chair, Clerk and Babcock 4S Clerking Manager
  • Routine monitoring of minutes by Babcock 4S as part of quality assurance process
  • Clerks new to the service will undertake a professional development programme
  • Temporary replacement if the clerk is absent, ill or if an unscheduled meeting is arranged
  • All personnel, payroll and expenses administration
  • Access to our clerking helpdesk

The Clerk’s duties

Your clerk will:

  • Ensure the Governance Consultancy team has an accurate list of governors for information dissemination purposes only
  • Advise on procedural and legal matters
  • Prepare and draft the Full Governing Body agenda in consultation with the Chair and Headteacher
  • Collate and distribute the agenda and other relevant papers
  • Minute the meeting
  • Ensure minutes reflect governing body’s statutory roles

Additional Services

  • Clerking additional Full Governing Body meetings
  • Clerking committee meetings
  • Clerking disciplinary, dismissal, admissions, exclusions and parental complaints, etc

Additional Information

  • If a new clerk is required to spend extra time at the start of the contract, ensuring the governing body is statutorily compliant (e.g. policies, terms of reference in place etc), charges may apply but would be agreed in advance of any additional duties being undertaken
  • Pricing of the service is on the basis that governing body papers are distributed by email or accessible via a governor portal etc. Additional charges may be incurred if the clerk is required to prepare and distribute hardcopy documents
  • Direct Engagement – a charge equivalent to one year’s SLA will be made if the Babcock clerk is engaged directly by the school. ‘Engagement’ means the engagement, employment or use of the clerk by the school or any third party to whom the clerk has been introduced by the school, on a permanent or temporary basis, whether under a contract of service or for services, and/ or through a company of which the clerk is an officer, employee or other representative, an agency, license, franchise or partnership arrangement.
